NBA Comes to the Dome

SYRACUSE, N.Y.  – There will be plenty of Orange in the mix when the New York Knicks take on the Philadelphia 76ers in an NBA preseason game at the Carrier Dome on October 14. The Knicks feature perennial all-star Carmelo Anthony, who led the Orange to the 2003 NCAA Championship, while the 76ers have former SU standouts Michael Carter-Williams and Jerami Grant on its roster.

The Dome is no stranger to NBA exhibition games — the Knicks-76ers matchup marks the 11th preseason game hosted by the Dome, dating back to 1990.

Here are some highlights from previous NBA shows in Syracuse:

New York vs. Philadelphia, October 22, 2012: Philadelphia pulled away for a 94-91 victory. This was the first time Anthony played in the Dome as a New York Knick. The 76ers, formally the Syracuse Nationals, were celebrating the franchise’s 50th season in Philadelphia. The game also featured NBA all-stars Jason Kidd and Tyson Chandler.

Minnesota vs. Detroit, October 15, 2010: The Timberwolves beat the Pistons 99-88 in a matchup that included three players with SU genetics. Minnesota had Jonny Flynn, Jason Hart and Wes Johnson on its roster. Power forward Kevin Love led the Timberwolves to victory with 21 points and 10 rebounds.

Denver vs. Phoenix, October 17, 2008: The Nuggets with Anthony and a Phoenix squad that included Shaquille O’Neal played in from of 22,115 fans at the Dome. J.R. Smith had 19 points and Anthony 14 in a 94-91 Denver victory.

Denver vs. Detroit, October 19, 2003: Anthony entered the Carrier Dome for the first time in an NBA uniform and 20,315 showed up to cheer him on. The Pistons won, 93-91, despite 23 points for Anthony.

Boston vs. New Jersey, October 15, 1993: The Celtics defeated the Nets, 108-98. The Nets were without Derrick Coleman, who missed the game while recovering from having his wisdom teeth extracted.

Chicago vs. New Jersey, October 20, 1992: Michael Jordan and the Bulls attracted the largest crowd for a preseason NBA game to the Carrier Dome with 28,602 on hand. Chicago won, 99-94.

Philadelphia vs. New Jersey, October 26, 1991: Charles Barkley led the Sixers to a 128-104 victory against the Nets. New Jersey had Rafael Addison and Derrick Coleman on its roster.

Miami vs. New Jersey, October 23, 1990: Sherman Douglas and Rony Seikaly were in the house along with the Miami Heat. Douglas tallied 26 points and eight assists.
